A battle-axe wielded by the dwarf Gimli in the Lord of the Rings trilogy has fetched the top price $US188,000 ($NZ217,000) at an auction in the United States.

It was part of a rare collection of props and costumes from Sir Peter Jackson's series sold at Beverly Hills, California.

Sting, the sword brandished by Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, sold for $US156,000 at Julien's Auctions.

The staff of Gandalf, used by actor Sir Ian McKellen, made $US50,000.

The exclusive items had been amassed over the past decade by collector Troika Brodsky.
