5:00 pm on 7 December 2013

A crewman has drowned after falling overboard from a commercial fishing boat off the coast of Napier.

Police say the skipper of the boat reported one of his crew had fallen overboard about one nautical mile offshore at 4.45am. Searchers recovered the man's body mid-morning.

The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter says its aircraft was used to search the harbour entrance and bay area joining the coastguard and other vessels.

Police are speaking to those on board the fishing vessel, but it's not yet clear how the man fell overboard.

His name will not be released until family have been notified.
