Highways reopened after crash, slip

6:04 pm on 7 December 2013

Two state highways in Coromandel and Bay of Plenty have been reopened after a crash and a slip blocked them for several hours on Saturday.

State Highway 29, which crosses the Kaimai range, was closed after a serious crash near Matamata left a 50-year-old man seriously injured and two other people with minor injuries.

State Highway 25 between Coromandel and Whitianga was also closed after the road was blocked by a slip at Whangapoua Hill.

The Transport Agency said late on Saturday afternoon that SH29 is now open and one lane of SH25 is also open.

The agency says it will still take some time for built-up traffic to clear and drivers should be patient.

Police say the crash happened when two cars collided just before 2pm near Te Poi Road, just south of Matamata. They say the badly hurt man had to be flown to hospital.
