A woman has been flown to hospital with serious facial injuries after a home invasion in Kaka Point, south of Balclutha.

Police say just before 6pm on Sunday, two men entered the woman's home intending to rob her, and hit in her with a length of wood.

Inspector Murray Hurst said the woman was hit in the head after confronting the men.

He said as the men fled they assaulted two other people outside the property on the Esplanade before running off. The bystanders' injuries aren't thought to be severe.

Mr Hurst said on Sunday night that five police units, including a dog handler, were at the scene trying to track down the pair.

They are described as Maori or Polynesian men wearing hoodies; one with a blue mask. One was seen running towards the beach.
