The Transport Agency has begun talking with contractors and others wanting to get involved in the building of a new highway north of Wellington.

Construction of the Mackays to Peka Peka expressway on the Kapiti Coast began last week and the agency held an open day on Monday attended by more than 200 businesses.

No more than 10% of the $580 million project has been allocated and the agency wants businesses of all sizes to be aware of what work could be on offer over four years.

It says there are a range of areas where there will be a demand for work during the build, such as the seeding of more than one million plants and the provision and construction of 18 bridges.
