Whakatane District Council has lodged an application for resource consent to develop a wastewater scheme in Matata in Bay of Plenty.
The Council says the community of more than 600 people is the largest in the district still relying on private septic tanks, the use of which can lead to environmental and human health concerns.
The council says three resource consent applications have been lodged with Bay of Plenty Regional Council, including a discharge permit for air contaminants from the site and the pump station and a land use consent.
The council says it has already shortlisted four tenderers for the design, build and operate contract.
Land designation applications have also been lodged with Whakatane District Council.
