Arrests follow burglaries of elderly

8:38 pm on 18 December 2013

Police are trying to track down more victims of a group that has been targeting elderly people around Auckland over the past few months.

Three people have been arrested after a series of burglaries between August and November. There have been at least 14 victims.

Police say people had their bank cards stolen and the offenders then call pretending to be from the bank requesting their PIN number.

Detective Senior Sergeant Darrell Harpur said the crimes target the most vulnerable in society.

"One of the elderly victims has been so traumatised by the crime, she has actually sold her home and moved on. She just didn't want to live there any more."

Most of the offences happened in Auckland; however some have been committed as far afield as Hamilton and Orewa.

Police believe more elderly people may have been targeted and want them to come forward.

Two men aged 32 and 49 and a 32-year-old woman have been arrested and are before the courts on fraud and burglary charges.
