Route into Golden Bay fully open

The main route into one of New Zealand's most popular summer destinations has been repaired after massive flooding washed away the road more than two years ago.

State Highway 60 at Bird's Hill on the road into Golden Bay has been restored to a two-lane highway, just in time for the holidays.

Since heavy rain washed away the road in 2011, a complex geotechnical operation has been undertaken, including stabilising the hillside and reconstructing and widening the road.

The Transport Agency's acting highways manager for Tasman, Mark Owen, says it's great that tourists will now have a clear run into Golden Bay this summer.
