Nominations called for new Game Animal Council

12:03 pm on 21 December 2013

Conservation Minister Nick Smith has called for nominations for the new Game Animal Council, which is intended to give game hunters a say in the management of hunting.

The council is being set up as part of a confidence and supply agreement between National and United Future. It will have up to 11 members.

Dr Smith says one of the first challenges facing the council will be developing a code of practice for aerial big-game trophy hunting.

The new council will also advise the minister on hunting issues, as well as provide information on safety, research on game animals and the management of herds of special interest.

The council is expected to be in place in the first half of 2015.
