They say the blaze started at about 3pm at Port Underwood.

Fire Service communications shift manager Andrew Norris said on Saturday evening two other properties were still at risk from the fire.

Mr Norris said fire personnel on the ground would remain on site overnight and helicopters with monsoon buckets would stay out for as long as possible.

Two firefighters involved in tackling the bush fire had to be treated at Wairau Hospital in Blenheim.

Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter says one of them, who is 50, suffered an abdominal injury while trying to evade the fire when it changed direction and the other, aged 21, suffered smoke inhalation.

About 30 firefighters fought the blaze, helped by six helicopters with monsoon buckets.

Residents evacuated to nearby Hakahaka Bay have been allowed to return to their houses.
