Greenpeace pair to spend Christmas in Russia

2:07 pm on 22 December 2013

Two New Zealanders who are among Greenpeace activists arrested over an Arctic oil drilling protest will spend Christmas in Russia.

Jonathan Beauchamp and David Haussmann are among the activists from 17 countries who are charged with hooglanism but expected to escape prosecution under a prisoner amnesty.

They were released on bail in November but none were allowed to return home

Russia's parliament on Wednesday approved a Kremlin-backed amnesty that should end the prosecution of the entire crew.

Greenpeace New Zealand executive director Bunny McDiarmid says she expects Mr Haussmann and Mr Beauchamp home early in the New Year.
