Police give new drink laws qualified approval

6:47 pm on 23 December 2013

Police have given new alcohol laws an interim green light and say there are signs the changes in legislation will have a positive effect.

Changes include earlier closing times for pubs and bars and offence tickets to people drinking in public or using a fake ID.

Inspector Ben Offner has thanked the New Zealand public for their co-operation and says although it is early days, the signs are positive that the legislation will reduce alcohol related harm in the community.

He says police focus is on prevention rather than enforcement, and the new legislation gives officers more tools to prevent alcohol related harm .
