Big haul for food organisation

11:38 am on 26 December 2013

A food-rescue organisation in Wellington has collected nearly 13,000kg of food this month to distribute to 27 different charities.

Kaibosh usually collects about 10,000 kg of food from about 25 producers and retailers each month, but that increased by nearly 30% in the lead-up to Christmas.

The organisation distributes food that would otherwise be wasted to 27 charities; up from 19 a year ago.

The number of donors has almost doubled in the past year.

Kaibosh general manager Matt Dagger says around two-thirds of the food collected is fresh fruit and vegetables.
