Body found in search for UK tramper

6:16 am on 28 December 2013

Search teams have recovered a body in the Nelson Lakes National Park which is likely to be that of a missing British tramper, Andrew Wyatt.

The police in Nelson say the body was found at the bottom of a 100 metre cliff below the Lake Constance Bluff, which is on Mr Wyatt's intended route between Blue Lake Hut and Waiau Pass.

The police say it could be several days before the body is formally identified.

Four search and rescue teams and a dog team began a ground search for Mr Wyatt today, after being blocked by poor weather including high winds.

Mr Wyatt, 41, was last seen alive on 15 December leaving a hut at Blue Lake in the Nelson Lakes National Park and heading for an exposed alpine area with dangerous bluffs.

He arrived in the country on 21 November to walk the Te Araroa Trail that links tracks from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

Police say it could be two days or more before they can formally identify the body.
