Police in Blenheim have released CCTV footage of an attempted armed robbery at a dairy in the South Island town.

They say a man went in to the Showgrounds Store on Maxwell Road at 11.43am on Sunday, threatened the shop attendant with a hammer and demanded cash.
No money was handed over. The man ran from the shop and was last seen heading east on Litchfield Street.
He is described as a large Polynesian with black hair frizzy on top and a long ponytail.
The man is about 182 centimetres tall and has a large nose. He was wearing white rimmed sunglasses, a black hoodie and black shoes with red soles.
The shop attendant was shaken, but not hurt.
