Measles case in Auckland

4:06 pm on 31 December 2013

Auckland health officials say they are dealing with the first case of measles in 18 months.

The person contracted measles while in Sydney earlier in December where they were taking part in the 2013 World Supremacy Battlegrounds hip-hop competition.

Teams from Hamilton and Huntly were in the event also and are being spoken to by health practitioners.

The last case of measles in Auckland was in June 2012. That one case saw 500 people infected and 80 hospital admissions.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service says symptoms include a high fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes and small white spots in the mouth. A rash then occurs about two weeks after being exposed.
