Tauranga ambulance and rescue helicopter services say a diver has died in an accident near Motiti Island off the coast of Papamoa.
They say the helicopter was called after the man, who was diving with a group of friends, got into difficulties on Wednesday afternoon.
He is thought to be in his 40s and was unable to be revived.
