Karekare scrub fire contained

9:13 pm on 2 January 2014

Fire-fighters tackling a scrub fire at Karekare on the coast west of Auckland have left for the night and will return to finish putting it out on Friday morning.

Crews were called to an area off Karekare Road at 1.30pm on Thursday. At its height, the Fire Service says about 20 hectares were alight.

Scott Marchant, a senior Rural Fire Officer for the Auckland Council, says the blaze has been contained to about eight hectares, but his team is leaving for the night as it is too dangerous to continue due to the cliff edge and debris.

Mr Marchant said there is no risk to homes and fire-fighters will be back at 6am.

It is not yet known how the fire started.
