Two kayakers who spent Thursday night at the base of a cliff near Godley Head in Christchurch have been winched out.

The men, aged 46 and 17, took their kayak out about 10.45am on Thursday. Police said they survived by sitting tight on a rocky bench below the Godley lighthouse.

Search co-ordinator Logan Penrose said the operation went better than expected, considering the high winds and a 1.5-metre sea swell. The helicopter crew pulled each man up individually.

Mr Penrose said the kayakers were wearing life jackets and wetsuits. They had took their kayak out about 10.45am on Thursday.
