Positively Wellington Tourism says a longer cruise ship season this summer bodes well for the future of the tourism industry.

Seventy eight ships are visiting the capital between October and May.

Chief executive David Perks says passengers contribute about $36 million to the economy of the capital, so they are important visitors.

With the visits spread throughout the season, he says the region will have a steady stream of income from tourism.
