A woman is in a critical condition after crashing her car into a power pole in the Wairarapa.
The incident happened about 9am on Sunday on State Highway Two in Clareville, north of Carterton.
Ambulance staff were unable to get to the woman who was trapped in the car due to live power lines.
The Fire Service had to pull the power lines away from the car to free her and she was flown by helicopter to Wellington hospital.
Earlier, a person was killed near Whakatane when a car left the road and collided with a tree before catching on fire.
