ACT urges Zespri inquiry

6:58 am on 7 January 2014

The ACT party is calling for a Government-led inquiry into Zespri, which has refused to co-operate with an industry investigation.

An initial inquiry led by Kiwifruit Growers Incorporated was ordered in March after Zespri was fined nearly $1 million for underpaying customs duties on its exports in China.

Kiwifruit Growers chief executive Mike Chapman said the company stopped co-operating when the Serious Fraud Office also began looking into its business dealings in October.

ACT's primary industries spokesperson Don Nicolson said the Government must now take up its own investigation into Zepsri in on behalf of kiwifruit growers.
