Historic lodge reaches new milestone

One of New Zealand's grandest old houses has been given a new lease of life by its American owners.

Pen-y-bryn Lodge is the largest single-storied wooden dwelling in Australasia. Run as as a luxury lodge by owners James Glucksman and James Boussy, the building turns 125 in 2014.

Tourism Waitaki marketing manager Megan Howell said since taking on the house three years ago the owners have opened it to casual diners, giving access to the region's public for the first time.

Ms Howell says the lodge is the only high-end accommodation of its type in Oamaru and hugely valuable to the town's tourism name.
