Boy saved from being swept out to sea

A fisherman has rescued a boy who was being dragged out to sea near Napier.

The police say the boy, who was not wearing a lifejacket, was kayaking at Whirinaki Beach on Monday when he fell into the water and lost his paddle.

Strong winds and the current dragged him out to sea but the fisherman managed to swim to him and guide him back to shore.

Police say it's a timely reminder to wear lifejackets when boating or kayaking.
