Officers investigating an armed robbery in Whangarei have recovered an empty black case the stolen money was in.

A man took the case at gunpoint from an Armourguard security guard outside a building on Water Street on Tuesday afternoon. The robber left in a car driven by another man.

Detective Sergeant Andrew Clubley said on Wednesday that police are appealing for witnesses who may be able to help identify the men.

Mr Clubley said they are Maori or Polynesian, of large build and aged in their early to late 20s.

Police are also appealing for sightings of the black 1999 Subaru Forrester used as a getaway car. It has since been recovered.
