Police have confirmed two people were killed in a three-vehicle crash on in Manawatu on Wednesday.
They are believed to be a 51-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man from Levin, but police say they are still working on identifying the victims.
The Nissan car they were in and two trucks were on SH1 when they collided at Oroua Downs between Sanson and Foxton early on Wednesday.
Police believe all three vehicles were travelling south and the Nissan became stuck between the semi-trailer and B-train trucks, possibly as one of the vehicles tried to overtake. All three vehicles caught fire in the resulting crash.
Senior Sergeant Nigel Allan said investigating officers are still piecing together what happened.
