Scout leader under investigation

Police are continuing to investigate one of two Christchurch scout leaders alleged to have engaged in sexually inappropriate online conversations with two girl scouts aged 13 and 14.

Both volunteers have been sacked from the scouts, but one in his mid-20s is no longer being investigated by police.

The first case involved a conversation on Facebook with a 13-year-old girl over a period of three months last year by a man who had been a scout leader for six years.

Scouts New Zealand said it case was brought to its attention by the girl's mother who was monitoring her daughter's Facebook page.

Detective Sergeant Darren Folau from the police child protection team said it was decided not proceed to court, as the case did not reach the threshold for online grooming.

Mr Folau said he cannot comment on the details of the second case, as it is still under investigation, but says it involves similar allegations over the same time period.
