The sunniest place in the country last year was Whakatane in eastern Bay of Plenty.
NIWA figures cited by Whakatane District Council show the town had more sunshine hours than anywhere else - 2792.
New Plymouth was second with 2667.
Gisborne pipped Lake Tekapo for third by one hour with 2483 and Nelson was fifth with 2411 sunshine hours.
