Trampers asked to tell police if they spot cannabis

Police want trampers in the upper South Island to tell them if they stumble across any cannabis-growing operations during their travels.

The growing season is now well underway and police say members of the public who are hiking or camping, or those living in rural areas, could easily come across plots or growers tending their crops.

Sergeant Rob Crawford says rural people were particularly at risk if cannabis is being grown in their area and says any information given to police would be treated with strict confidentiality.

He says to watch out for people going into the bush with gardening tools and water bottles as it tends to be a bit of a giveaway.
