Coromandel police are trying to track down a group of people who were camping at Whiritoa beach near Whangamata to try and identify a person who may have fallen into the sea.
A search began on Sunday after person saw someone either falling or jumping into the sea off the rocks just after 5pm.
Sergeant Vince Ranger said on Monday despite an extensive search, no one has been located and no one has been reported missing.
Mr Ranger said police particularly want to hear from a group of people camping at the south end of the beach at the weekend, as they need to establish who was in the area at the time.
Police will reassess if the search is to continue on Tuesday morning.
