DoC plans deer cull from island

10:24 pm on 13 January 2014

The Department of Conservation is preparing to remove about a dozen deer from Secretary Island in Fiordland National Park.

DoC senior services ranger Norm MacDonald says the 12 to 14 remaining deer are part of a larger population that once inhabited the island.

Mr MacDonald says it is a challenging and costly operation, as it requires boats and helicopters. He says it is hoped to go ahead soon when the weather allows.

Secretary Island, which is rat-free, is a sanctuary for native birds and wildlife. Foraging by the deer damages native habitats.

Mr MacDonald says he hopes to have the island cleared of deer by the end of summer.
