Trust still wants national online offender database

The Sensible Sentencing Trust is renewing its calls for a national online offender database to meet a growing demand for more offender information.

The trust has launched an updated version of its own database, that contains information on more than 5000 convicted paedophiles, serious violent offenders and sexual offenders.

Chief executive Garth McVicar said that while the database was offline for a month being updated the trust was inundated with inquiries from the public wanting that information.

He said Justice Minister Judith Collins is making steps in the right direction in considering putting court records online, but she should go further in running a publicly-available offender database.
