A three-month-old baby admitted to Starship Hospital in Auckland after suffering serious injuries has died.

The boy was flown from Southland to the children's hospital on Tuesday.

Emergency services had been called to a house at Riverton at about 7.25pm on Monday after reports that a baby had serious injuries and was unresponsive.

Police in Invercargill said the child died early on Wednesday morning as a result of his injuries.

Police are continuing their investigation on behalf of the coroner and to determine whether there is any criminal culpability.

An ESR team and officers are continuing a forensic examination of the Riverton home.
