Fiji team confident despite cash problems

The head of the Fiji Rugby Union says team morale is strong and it will be competitive at the Sevens World Series in Wellington next month, despite being cash-strapped.

The International Rugby Board (IRB) has suspended all financial support - amounting to about $2 million annually - to the union until it makes key financial reporting, administration and governance reforms.

The union's acting chief executive, Berlin Kafoa, said it is close to confirming several sponsorship deals for the team to make it less reliant on IRB funding.

He said team confidence is good despite the current financial situation, which he said had brought the team closer together.
