A fire that spread to a pine forest in Northland has been contained though rural firefighters say it will take a day or two to fully extinguish.

The Fire Service said it was alerted to the suspicious blaze on the edge of the road near the settlement of Pouto, south of Dargaville, about 10pm on Wednesday.

Helicopter crews and firefighters worked through the night to fight the fire that spread to a commercial plantation and at its height covered about seven hectares.

Kaipara's principal rural fire officer, Kevin Ihaka, says the fire was contained on Thursday morning and crews were working to extinguish the last few patches of smouldering ground.
