Fire fanned by wind, woman hurt

5:13 pm on 17 January 2014

A 70-year-old woman has been seriously injured by a falling tree and two bushfires have been burning in Nelson as high winds batter the region on Friday.

A severe weather warning is in place for the region due to strong south-westerly gales.

Waimea Rural Fire Authority's Ian Reade says a blaze on the Kina Peninsula, near Mapua, may have been started by power lines.

However despite the high winds, the fire is now under control and no houses are at risk, he says.

Another scrub fire which started in the Todd Valley area of Nelson in the morning has also been contained.

Tree falls on woman

A woman working in a paddock in Motueka was seriously injured by a tree that is believed to have blown over and hit her from behind on Friday.

She has been flown to hospital where she is said to be in a serious but stable condition with injuries to her leg, chest and back.
