Regatta marks Terra Nova's arrival

1:43 pm on 19 January 2014

For the second year running a regatta has been held to mark a century since Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova ship landed in Oamaru after its failed Antarctica expedition.

The surviving crew of the Terra Nova sailed into Oamaru on February 10, 1913 from the South Pole with word of the deaths of Scott and his companions.

There are 15 vessels from the north Otago city at the event with more from Timaru and Dunedin.

The club captain at North Otago Yacht and Powerboat Club Graeme Thorn is pleased the event has become an annual one.

Mr Thorn says there were three races on Saturday and the final race began at about 10.30 am Sunday morning.
