Heavy rain warning for North Island

7:56 am on 20 January 2014

Metservice is warning torrential rain in parts of the North Island could lead to flooding as the tail-end of Cyclone June - reduced now to a deep low - reaches New Zealand.

Heavy, persistent rain may cause coastal erosion in exposed areas on the northern and eastern coast of the island from Monday night Metservice warns.

Daniel Corbett told Morning Report that Northland to Gisborne, including the Bay of Plenty, will experience gale-force north-easterlies later on Monday but very strong south-westerlies and heavy rain will reach as far south as Wellington and Marlborough on Tuesday.

Mr Corbett says the the weather will start to improve on Wednesday.
