Six charges have been laid against a man police say broke into a supermarket in Oamaru while armed.

Bakery staff at New World on State Highway 1 found the 62-year-old man with a gun about 4.30am on Wednesday and believe he smashed the front door to gain entry.

Police had to evacuate staff and closed the road for a period and called for the Armed Offenders Squad in Dunedin.

The man appeared in the Dunedin District Court later in the day charged with aggravated burglary, using a firearm to prevent arrest, possessing an offensive weapon and three charges of presenting a firearm.

He was remanded in custody to reappear on Friday.

Foodstuffs, the operator of the New World supermarket, says no-one was injured in the incident.
