Anti-spy base protest at Waihopai

7:45 pm on 25 January 2014

About 70 people attended a demonstration on Saturday at the Waihopai spy base in Marlborough, calling for the facility to be closed.

A spokesperson for the Anti-Bases Campaign Murray Horton says there were no attempts to breach fences and no arrests.

Mr Horton says the group handed a letter outlining their concerns to the police to be handed to the base commander.

He says since the base was established in 1987 there have been warnings it would be used to spy on New Zealanders, and that has been confirmed by revelations about the Government Communications Security Bureau and by the American whistleblower Edward Snowden.
