'Spectator from hell' may be banned

A police officer in Christchurch taken to court for assaulting a football referee may be banned from attending matches in the city for two years.

Senior Constable Keith Rose was discharged without conviction in November last year for grabbing the referee by the lapels and yelling at him following a premier league match in which his son was playing.

The judge described the 59-year-old as the 'spectator from hell'.

The Mainland Football Board is considering banning Rose from games for two years. Chief executive Mike Coogan says its disciplinary committee has fined the Western team $2000 and stood the coach down for two weeks.

The issue is on the agenda for February's board meeting and will be discussed then.
