Tourist's murderer still 'troubled'

9:42 pm on 28 January 2014

The man who murdered a British tourist more than 20 years ago remains troubled by his obsessive compulsive disorder, the Parole Board has been told.

Charles Coulam was sentenced to life in prison in 1989 for the murder of Monica Cantwell.

The board has declined him parole following an assessment earlier in January.

Coulam is diagnosed with resistance schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder and a sexual disorder. He is receiving medical treatment and will finish a sex offenders' treatment programme in April.

Coulam is subject to a indefinite compulsory inpatient treatment order, meaning he is under Ministry of Health care. He will be considered for parole again in a year.
