Body cameras to be trialled in prisons

3:11 pm on 29 January 2014

A trial where prison officers will wear body cameras in some high security facilities, begins next week.

The scheme will be trialled for six months in a maximum security area in Auckland prison and two high security areas at Rimutaka prison.

The Department of Corrections says it's trying to increase safety for prison officers and inmates.

Chief Custodial Officer Neil Beales said the cameras have proved effective overseas.
