Smoke-free social housing supported

10:12 pm on 30 January 2014

The Christchurch City Council plans to instil a non-smoking policy in its social housing units.

The policy stipulates that where new units are built or purchased, or units are remodelled, tenancy agreements contain a non-smoking clause.

Smoking will only be allowed on external porches.

Existing tenants who smoke inside are permitted to continue that, but subsequent tenancies will be subject to the non-smoking clause.

Council staff will work with Smokefree Canterbury and other health providers to ensure that tenants who smoke are helped to quit.
