Driver four times over legal limit

Marlborough's police chief says he has witnessed the worst case of drink-driving in his career.

A man stopped after reports of erratic driving recorded a breath alcohol level of 1779 micrograms per litre of breath - more than four times the legal limit.

Area commander Inspector Simon Feltham said on Monday it beggars belief that people are still showing such blatant disregard for the law and for other people's lives.

Police had set up checkpoints in Marlborough for the weekend to coincide with the region's annual wine and food festival.

On Saturday night alone they detected five drivers over the limit, one of whom was caught directly outside the festival site.
