Wednesday's headlines: Backlash over Otago University's decision to sponsor the Highlanders; plan for police to wear body cameras; Christchurch City Council may be considering getting into the rental housing market.

NZ Herald

The New Zealand Herald leads with the headline 'Dalton's rest-day call a mistake'.

During a television interview, Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker said team boss Grant Dalton's decision to agree to a lay day during the Cup was clearly a mistake.

Also in the paper the findings from the annual 'state of the nation' report compiled by the Salvation Army.

Waikato Times

The Waikato Times reports on how the parents of a Taumaranui primary school are furious they were not told a former staff member is facing sex charges. The paper says a former teacher is on bail four charges of indecent assault.

In other news: surgeons at Waikato hospital removed a nail-like pin from the lung of a Maketu boy on Monday, after he accidentally swallowed it while playing.

Dominion Post

'Plan for cops to wear cameras' is the headline in The Dominion Post. The paper says Justice Minister Judith Collins is considering allowing frontline police to wear body cameras while on duty.

It says the minister recently returned from Britain where officers are trialling the smartphone sized devices.

In other news: the paper says the police are to begin checking every car they stop to make sure it is safe for the road. The paper says officers will check a car's tyres, windscreen wipers, indicators and lights.

The Press

The Press says a major cocaine shipment was discovered by chance while an empty shipping container was being repaired. Lyttleton Port staff were fixing a refrigeration unit on the container when a suspicious package containing white powder fell to the ground.

Also in the paper: suggestions that Christchurch City Council may be considering getting into the affordable rental housing market, to help alleviate the city's accommodation shortage.

The Otago Daily Times reports on a backlash from staff over Otago University's decision to sponsor the Highlanders. The paper says staff are concerned the University is sharing a space on the team's jersey with an alcohol company.

The paper says a Ranfurly boy has been referred to youth aid after a fire that damaged an Art Deco building.
