El Nino foreseen

Predictions of an El Nino weather event later this year are probably right but it won't be clear for another two months, Victoria University Associate Professor James Renwick says.

A team of German scientists say there is a 75 percent chance of an El Nino event this year.

Associate Professor James Renwick of Victoria University said all the usual forms of weather modelling are showing that is likely.

He said that would mean windier and cooler weather next summer, with a chance of drought in the east, from Gisborne to Christchurch, and wetter than usual conditions in the west and bottom of the South Island.
