NZ hang-glider pilot jailed in Canada

6:42 pm on 12 February 2014

A New Zealand-born hang-glider pilot who failed to connect a woman during a tandem flight, causing her to fall 300 metres to her death, has been sentenced to five months' prison in Canada.

William Jon Orders, 51, was sentenced after earlier pleading guilty to criminal negligence causing the death of Lenami Godinez-Avila in 2012.

Ms Godinez-Avila died after plummeting from the hang-glider shortly after taking off for a flight across the Fraser valley in British Columbia.

Orders told the court he failed to hook his passenger to the glider and did not conduct a safety check before launching.

After landing, he swallowed a memory card containing video of the incident.

Orders was born in New Zealand and had applied for Canadian citizenship before he was charged.
