Auckland is to have another formidable building rise above the city skyline, second in height only to the Sky Tower.

The Auckland Centre Tower is being developed by Shanghai-based New Development Group, and will be a mix of commercial and residential accommodation, and retail and entertainment venues.

It will be built on what is now a vacant lot at the corner of Elliot and Victoria streets and is on the route of the proposed City Rail Link.

The Auckland Centre Tower will cost about $350 million, with a building consent target of 2015 and completion by 2020.

Once it is built, New Zealand's tallest buildings will be the Sky Tower at 328 metres, the NDG Auckland Centre at 209 metres and the Vero Centre at 172 metres.
