Questions over asbestos disposal

11:28 am on 13 February 2014

New Zealand First wants answers from the Government about potential plans to transport asbestos-contaminated material from Christchurch to Southland.

At the moment, the contaminated material is taken to Kate Valley, a landfill north of Christchurch, in specific containers and disposed of in designated areas.

Christchurch earthquake issues spokesperson Denis O'Rourke said he's heard about plans to change that arrangement from sources in the transport industry and wants to discuss them with Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee.

Mr O'Rourke said there are guidelines for safe work practices and transportation of asbestos-contaminated material and he wants reassurance they are being adhered to.

He said the idea of transporting asbestos material to distant, substandard landfills is crazy and it needs to be stopped and regulated.
